For us, the cans are true works of art. Every beer, every creation gets its own illustration featuring an endemic bird from the corresponding hop region, thereby representing our name and the origin of the hops.

Figurative & Media Artist
Belarus / Austria

Kat Suryna is a figurative and media artist of Belarusian and Erzya origin who works at the intersection of traditional fine art, new media, and philosophical research. Following a six-year education in the Russian academic tradition of drawing and painting, she delved into academic philosophy in Belarus. She left the country in 2012 to continue her studies in semiotics at the University of Tartu in Estonia and philosophy of science at the Central European University in Hungary.

She resumed her artistic practice in 2019 in Hong Kong and has since continued to develop it in Denmark, Austria, and East Asia. Currently, Kat’s artistic work is on hiatus as she devotes herself to the challenges of building a life in Austria and founding her startup, Liftabird.

Kat’s work has consistently addressed questions of identity—city and periphery, foreignness, self-alienation, and resilience. Her series Wachauer Weinreben, Mzansi, and Presence have been exhibited in Austria, Hong Kong, Denmark, and Switzerland. In parallel, she curated international art and technology events in Linz—including the robotic art festival Hedonistika 2022 and the Campus Exhibition of the Ars Electronica Festival 2024.

Trained for six years in the Russian academic tradition of drawing and painting, she later pursued academic philosophy in Belarus before leaving the country in 2012 to study semiotics at the University of Tartu, Estonia, and philosophy of science at the Central European University, Hungary.

Her artistic practice resumed in Hong Kong in 2019 and has since developed across Denmark, Austria and East Asia. Kat's practice is currently on hiatus while she attends to the demands of building a life in Austria and a startup, Liftabird.

Kat's work returned consistently to questions of identity — city and periphery, foreignness, self-alienation, and resilience. Her fine art series — Wachauer Weinreben, Mzansi, and Presence — were exhibited in Austria, Hong Kong, Denmark, and Switzerland. Alongside her own practice, Kat curated international art and technology events in Linz, including the robotic art festival Hedonistika 2022 and the Campus Exhibition of Ars Electronica Festival 2024.

Even as a child, I loved to draw. Nature motifs, especially animals, fascinated me the most right from the start. At Vogelsang, every creation has its own unique character, and it is always an exciting challenge to discover how this can be reflected in the design of the can. Every project begins with the question: Which bird best embodies the essence of this beer and the origin of the hops? Just as with the brewing itself, we like to leave room for creativity and experimentation in our designs.

I prefer to reach for watercolors or colored pencils to capture the vibrant colors of the birds, though sometimes a simple, minimalist sketch says more than any elaborate detail. Every drawing is created with great care and love for the subject, and it is a unique joy every time to hold the finished can in my hands.

The goal is to create brewing art that you can see and taste. Because every beer tells a story, and it begins even before the first sip.
