A drop of this Black IPA is like the black plume of a Schopfwachtel (California quail). The bird, like the hops in this beer, is at home in the western United States. Its plumage in colorful, muted shades stands for the many flavor notes of this style.
The Style
The Black IPA, also called Cascadian Dark Ale, is a beer of contradictions. The dark color comes from roasted malt, which gives depth but no heavy coffee bitterness. The hops do the rest. The beer looks dark and still tastes fresh. In Austria the style is rare.
In the Glass
Deep black brown with a ruby shimmer, beige head. Roasted malt and a hint of licorice root on the nose, with fresh hops behind it. Vanilla and coconut on the palate, a velvety body, noticeable bitterness and a long finish.
Serving
At 8 to 11 °C in a tulip glass or pint. With a hearty burger or dark chocolate.
